Cover CD of the most excellent MacFormat magazine from July 1997.
To really appreciate these CDs, use a 56K modem for a month.
The waiting, when 5K per second download was good, the phone bills, when you dialled up, and paid attention to the time because you paid by the minute.
Hard-drives had, maybe, a few GB (mine was 1.2GB, I think).

This is the February, 1994 edition of the most excellent British Mac magazine, MacFormat. It is issue 9. I learnt about Macs from these magazines. They give a very good idea of Macs at this time.

One particular gem in this issue is on the Internet and something called a browser. This browser is called Mosaic. For those not around (or even alive) then, it gives a good background to these remarkable machines. The ads and the cost of things are also eye-openers. Remember, the prices in this magazine are in pounds sterling.

This is the April 1994 issue of MacFormat. Power Macs are just about to burst on to the scene and one can already see (with the benefit of hindsight), the beginning of the end of the Macintosh 68k platform.

What will become Windows 95 was still in development (having being pushed forward to 1995). Windows users have Windows 3.1, OS/2 or possibly the first versions of NT. Roughly 1 in 8 computers being sold are Macintosh's. Apple was the second largest computer manufacturer in the world, if my memory serves me correctly.

Compatibility:

The various programs included on the disk will run on most Macintosh emulators but likely not all. YMMV.

This is the May 1994 issue of the English Mac magazine, MacFormat. I especially like it because it presents the world of Macintosh to a new audience. Despite the Mac being 10 years' old at this point, it was still new to a lot of people. For many, it was their first experience of GUI computing. Many would have had exposure to command line-based systems in school or at work, but the GUI was new.

In this issue, there is an in detail article on HyperCard as well as reasonably priced alternatives to the expensive 800-pound gorillas.

MacFormat floppies No.1 to No. 35 - but not disk images of the floppy disks, sadly.

This archive was compiled by MacFormat and included with their CD-ROM issue 36 (April 1996) on the ROM, located in "MacFormat 36:Floppy:MacFormat Floppy Archive".

It was towards the end of floppy distribution for the magazine, and their staff/management had decided to include all past floppy content with that issue.

Compatibility:

Some titles will run OK on PPC and more modern 68k color Macs, others will also run on very early Macintosh or Mini vMac, YMMV.

Although some of the titles are compatible with System 6, this image when extracted requires a Mac running System Software 7.0 or newer to mount the (Disk Copy 6) image.

Britain's best-selling Macintosh magazine, MacFormat. From issue #13 onward (June 1994) this magazine was also sold with a cover CD-ROM (or two) containing demos, shareware, public domain software and sometimes, full commercial apps.

Top DL:MacFormat Issue 16 CD Edition, September 1994 .ISO in Compact Pro ".cpt" archive, in MacBinary wrapper - had to do it this way, StuffIt refused to compress this archive sufficiently (StuffIt Expander will extract it OK tho').

Compatibility:

These early MacFormat CD Editions have both System 6 and 7 desktop partitions on them. So you can for example, drag this CD image into a Mini vMac window with it running SSW 6 and it will mount with full access to the CD content.

RedShift 1.2

Application file:

In 1994, RedShift was the world's most popular multimedia astronomy program on the planet. It still holds up pretty good today. With RedShift you can explore the Solar System and beyond, and simulate astronomical events over a 15,000 year period, and much more. You can pause any animation and click anything (stars, nebulae, planets, moons etc) to pull up info on that object. Much of the text has hyperlinks leading to even more info and perhaps even better, RedShift contains a complete online Penguin Dictionary of Astronomy.

Compatibility:

Macintosh 68030 or 68040 CPU or any PPC Mac or Mac clone capable of running a classic Mac OS, 7.0 - 9.2.2 - Basilisk II and SheepShaver are also OK. It does not run on Mini vMac.

  • System Requirements Mac:
    • System Software 7.0 to Mac OS 9.2.2
    • QuickTime 1.5 or newer (2.5 on CD)
    • Apple CD-ROM (or newer CD/DVD driver)
  • System requirements PC:
    • Windows 3.1 to Windows XP (set to Win 95 compatibility mode)
    • QuickTime 1.1 or newer (1.1 on CD)

The RedShift application on the CD is FAT formatted (contains both 68k & PPC native code), which you can copy to your hard drive if desired.

RedShift runs directly from the CD. On a fast Mac this is good enough but on a slower Mac or Basilisk II or SheepShaver, the RedShift program (FAT) can be copied to your hard drive - the CD or .ISO is still required to be mounted for the program to access (600 MB of data).

There are also folders containing the 68k & PPC only versions of RedShift which you can use if you prefer. If the icons you see are initially "generic"; Copying the application to your desktop and rebuilding the desktop, will restore the proper icons for RedShift.

Its recommended in the "ReadMe" that if you copy the program to your drive, that you should also copy the five sample settings files to the same location. In the root level of the CD these sample settings files are: "Focus on Phobos, Focus on Mimas, Earth and Moon, Saturn with big moons, and Jupiter with big moons". Double-clicking any of the samples will launch the program into an animated demo and is a good way to start exploring RedShift.

Note: RedShift is optimised to run in 256 colors, but if your display is set to 1000's or millions of colors, RedShift runs its animations in 8 bit gray-scale which is not so good. On PPC Mac, you will be alerted and offered to change your settings to 256 colors but the 68k version does not, so you need to be aware of this if you run this on a 68k Mac or Basilisk.

On Basilisk II the animation is fairly choppy, not so bad on Sheepshaver but still choppy. Much better on the real deal.

Even choppier, but works. You can mount a CD of this and share it over a network (AppleTalk over TCP/IP).

The year is 1993. The UK has had macs for almost 10 years and Future Publishing are dipping their toes in the Mac market. If a family has a computer, then it's a BBC, Sinclair 48K or a Commodore they got some 10 years' earlier.

Few have PCs, let alone a Mac, but many, especially students, want one. There are macs in schools and especially in university. People working with numbers want Lotus 1-2-3 or MicroSoft Excel. The young people in the office are raving about them.

Compatibility:

Modern machines, or, at least, machines made since 2006. The files are big.

This is the November 1994 issue of the U.K. mac magazine, MacFormat. The PDF was scanned on a Kyocera Taskalfa as a JPEG at the highest level. The images were corrected for straightness with the ruler tool and cut to the ratio 1:1.3333. The images were then reduced by batch job in Photoshop CS3 to 1600x1200 at 72dpi. The PDF was made in Acrobat 8 from these 1600x1200 images. The version was set to Acrobat 4, bookmarks were set and OCR was applied. The final size of the PDF is 91MB.
